Stupid question, how do doctors check for dilation?

Do they fist you?
Edit: when my sister went into labor I was her support person and every time the doctor come in to check. I saw her ball up her fist and shove it up there. Just thought it was kinda odd

No they just stick 1 or 2 fingers inside. 
If your sisters baby was not positioned right the dr could have stuck his/her hand up there and try to manually turn the baby.

When I’ve been checked by nurses for all 3 of my labors they sometimes had me make a fist and put it at my tail bone while laying down. I think it just adjusted the angle of my pelvis so they could check more accurately. Not sure why they would need to insert a whole fist up there too, though... 🤔

They insert two fingers and spread them like scissors. Depending on how far they have to spread the fingers in your cervix is how dilated you are. Only getting a finger in is a 1...

Your cervix isn’t that high. They’ll do a cervix check. It’s maybe two fingers. My dr has never had the whole hand in my baby shoot
