When should a test show positive?

I took a test when I was 8 & 10 days late & they both showed negative. They were just cheep tests so I’m not sure how accurate it could’ve been. I’m now 12 days late & wondering when I should test again with a better test

You really should be able to test after 8 / 10 days late. Even with a cheap test. 
This is, when your period is regular. If not it can depend on when your ovulation was how many days you are late. 
Ask your doctor if your period doesnt come and you don’t test pregnant.

Cheap tests work great. I got a blazing positive at 5 days late

Cheap tests work just as well as the expensive ones. 
Is it possible you ovulated late?
Also it's possible for HCG to not show up in urine until you are 5 or 6 weeks pregnant, sometimes (rarely) later.
With 2 of my pregnancies I didnt get a positive test until closer to 6 weeks.
