Exclusively pumping ?

Question

Any mommas planning to or have exclusively pumped. I know I don’t want to nurse my baby for sure. I think it’s great if you choose to just not for me but I have considered exclusively pumping, however there seems to not be a bunch of info out there. Looking for advice, tips, experiences.....
Nothing Judging please, I formula fed my first and just gathering info

First of all, more power to you for investigating this option, way to go!!! 😊 I had to exclusively pump for a few weeks due to my son being in the NICU, and I will tell you that I absolutely hated it. Everyone is different, but I was constantly worried we wouldn’t have enough for his appetite and I found myself pumping for a lot of time every day, during which time I couldn’t do much else or hold my son. I was told that eventually if I kept going my supply would have increased enough that I would have had to do fewer sessions a day, but after 3 weeks of it I was relieved when they suggested we try to nurse instead.

I kind of exclusively pumped with my second daughter. I pumped during the day and only nursed her in the morning and at night in the the beginning months. 
You have to be pretty diligent with your pumping schedule to keep your supply up if you’re exclusively pumping. I suggest pumping every 2 to 3 hours no less than 20 minutes per session. I’m not going to lie, it’s A LOT of work and believe it or not nursing is a lot more convenient once you establish a good nursing routine.

Not 100%, but I think you need to breastfeed for a couple days until your milk comes in, then you should be able to pump that. I would see if your hospital had a lactation consultant, or someone in your town. Or breastfeeding groups on fb might have better insight than I do

I’ve exclusively pumped. My little boy got some colostrum right after being born and I tried my hardest to breastfeed, but he just wouldn’t latch. I even went to a Lactation consultant... it just led to so many tears that I decided I would do the next best thing and pump. I did it every three hours. I was lucky to have a good supply. I would even set up the boppy lounger and pump while he drank from the bottle... when I got a bit I would pop his bottle out, put some freshly pumped milk in and voila... that was the freshest I could get it to him. Just read up on storage guidelines. Pumping really isn’t bad when you get into a good routine. Good luck!

Fed is best sweets and I had to formula feed my son due to low milk supply and I copped a lot of judgment from people around me including women I thought were my friends!! I’m going to try and nurse my daughter but if it doesn’t happen then so be it. Good on you for making a choice that works for you!! ❤️

My 3rd child I exclusively pumped for 3 months. I just pumped with her schedule. I’d pump while she had a bottle from the last session. It helped my let down to have her close while I pumped. Sometimes I’d add a few extra pumping sessions to build my supply in my freezer. Sometimes I’d pump both, sometimes just one side. You’ll eventually find what works for you 🙂

My last child I had to exclusively pump, I had really flat nipples and he just couldn’t latch and I tried everything. I also work a lot of hours and didn’t have many options but to pump. It’s hard, but not impossible. If you can’t breast feed that’s the next best thing. Honestly, I’ve heard so many horror stories about babies ending up in the hospital or even dying because moms try so hard to breast feed out of fear of being judged. Yes, breast feeding is best for baby, but remember it’s not your only option.

I exclusively pumped with both my girls starting around 4 months and going until about a year later. Both times they got bottles and decided that was better 🤷🏻‍♀️. The first time I was working and it was hard to maintain my pumping schedule. Because you’ll need a schedule. I did it 5x day, 20 min sessions with my double electric pump.   It worked really well for me, however I have an underlying hormone imbalance where I make waaay to much of the hormone that makes you lactate, so I’m basically a dairy cow. My SIL and sister tried to exclusively pump but my SIL just didn’t produce enough and my sister wasn’t able to really pump at work. So they did a mix of formula and breast milk when able. 
Basically exclusively pumping is a big commitment, but it can be done, you just have to stick with it. I wouldn’t recommend starting out doing it (unless for some reason your baby ended up in the NICU, heaven forbid) but once your body has kind of gotten the hang of milk production it’s easier.

I plan on exclusively pumping with this baby. I tried breastfeeding my first 12 years ago but she couldn’t latch and it made me feel very uncomfortable, and I couldn’t afford a breast pump at the time, so she was formula fed. I spent the first half of this pregnancy set on formula feeding this baby, too. I know the benefits of breast milk and after doing a lot of research, I realized that exclusively pumping was an option, and my best option. I had never known it was an option until I thought about hey why can’t I do it like this and started searching for more info. From everything I’ve read, it’s harder than breastfeeding, simply because you have extra steps involved with the pumping and storage process rather than just taking out your breast and feeding. But for someone like myself who just really feels uncomfortable breastfeeding, I’m happy to commit to more work in order to provide the best nutrition for my baby in a way that doesn’t make me feel negative or uncomfortable. Good luck, however you decide to feed your baby. It’s a very personal choice. Nobody can make it for you and nobody should shame you for whatever you decide ❤️

I exclusively pumped for 4.5 months Bc my daughter wouldn’t latch. It’s definitely time consuming - but I always had extra and was able to build a good stash. As someone else said, you’ll eventually get into a groove. By the end I was pumping every 4-5 hours during the day for 20-25 minutes. And I wasn’t pumping after she went to bed. Buying a hands free pumping bra saved my life and sanity! I strongly recommend that. Good luck!
