So I got engaged a A couple weeks ago and my family and his family are all excited for the wedding but how do I tell them that I don’t want to have a wedding all I want to do is get married at city hall and go on a really nice vacation . ￼

If you want to elope, do it. It’s your day and a marriage is really between you two anyway, so why stress over every detail of one day for everybody else’s enjoyment? On a side note, I wanted to elope but my husband insisted on a wedding. It was stressful and I gained 20lbs and fought with my mother about what she thought I should do. However, Less than 2 years later, my mother in law died and it actually meant a lot to us that she was there and my husband and she got to have a dance.

Invite them over for an “engagement party” then surprise them with the marriage license. A good friend of mine did this and it went over wonderfully! Great party...plus no one will want to ruin your night after the fact!

Just say so. I mean in their defense this is not only “your day”, but there’s as well. Why? Because they have played a role in your life that has lead you to this moment. Maybe a very small ceremony at home would be fine with them. A wedding symbolizes so much. It’s not just the start of your life as a wife, but the end to a life where your only titles were daughter, sister, etc.

Most city halls let you have a few guest. So parents could come. I about did this before I opted to have a very small venue ceremony of less than 50 people. We had discussed with our parents our want for our day to be small and intimate. We had discussed the court house option and having a small private family dinner at our favorite restaurant with just our immediate family. They were very open to it. In the end we just opted to invite a few more people and went with our small venue and small guest list. I think if you express that this is truly what you want and that it will truly make you happy your parents will be on board. Especially if they can be a little part of your special day.

it's your day, do it your way. we went to the city hall with a couple of coworkers as witnesses and I told my parents afterwards. they were angry for a few months, but 17yrs and 2 kids later nobody cares! if they love you and are happy for you, they'll get over it
