Breastfeeding and anesthesia?? (Help!)

I'm getting my wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow and they're putting me under I talked to two different doctors my daughter's pediatrician and the anesthesiologist my daughter's pediatrician said I can feed her once I can hold her and function normally and the anesthesiologist said I have to pump and dump for 48 hours like which one is it!? Can any mom's help me with this?

Listen to the anesthesiologist since anesthesia is their specialty.

Went through the same thing when my daughter was 2 weeks old (my ins was ending and I had to get all 4 wisdom teeth out or I was SOL). I bf her like normal. My oral surgeon told me to ask my ped because he personally didn’t know a lot about bf (at least he was honest) and my ped said it was fine. ❤️❤️

I recommend calling the Infant Risk Center at this number to check. Anesthesiologists are experts in anesthesia, not breastfeeding.

In case you would actually like to follow research instead of randos on an app. I would also like to point out that many types of doctors do studies in many different areas- so you never really know what any doctor is an expert in.

Go to kellymom.com, she has great info on all things related to breastfeeding. She says as soon as you’re alert, and can hold baby, it’s safe to nurse. Like I said, I had teeth removed when my daughter was four months and I nursed her as soon as I got home.

I am an anesthesia provider. The pump and dump rule is based on old research. If you can hold your baby safely you can breastfeed. If it makes you feel better you can pump and then mark that milk. When you are ready to use it mix it with some “unmedicated” milk to really decrease the chance of any meaningful
Amounts of meds crossing over. But that’s really overkill.

Sometimes meds can get into the blood stream and therefore the milk. I would bring to both doctors attention that they gave you different answers and ask them to double check.

Pumping and dumping for 48 hours will lower your supply, probably pretty significantly if you’ve never pumped.

You can nurse right away.  I’ve done it when my daughter was 4 months old. Most doctors give blanket statements and don’t really know anything about breastfeeding. Your pediatrician is correct!!
