Can my friends really support me being trans if they listen to transphobic singers (like Cardi B) after I mention that I hate the artist bc they’re transphobic??

So basically I told my friend that I hated Cardi B bc she’s transphobic and they just said ‘oh’ and carried on listening to her music (like,, we were camping for a week and they kept playing her songs). Like a lot of us are gay and wouldn’t dream of supporting homophobic artists.. so like why is it different with this??

I personally don’t like her at all, as a person or an artist, but some people do. I think people just learn to separate. Plenty of artist are shitty people or talk about shitty stuff in their music, yet people are still fans. That’s just how it is, especially when it comes to pop or rap artists. Unfortunately, people don’t become famous because of what a genuine person they are or how socially aware they are.

She just likes her music, not her views. The Migos are homophobic but I listen to them sometimes as a lesbian. The owner of coachella also funds an anti gay campaign but lots of gay people go to coachella

If someone is REALLY into someone it might be hard for them to really understand. I would suggest you ask them that they at least do not listen to her around you as she is very offensive to the trans community and it badly bothers you, and hopefully you can eventually get them to stop supporting her music all together. But, if you can just get them to not listen to her around you right now, then that is a step in the right direction. If they still don’t care or defend her or whatever, then no, they’re not being a real friend. Have you fully explained the situation to this person? Maybe it just hasn’t sunk in yet how problematic the situation is because cisgender people (myself included) don’t always see the experience that is not our own.

I think that even tho they like the singer doesn’t mean they don’t like you. I mean you don’t have to not like -insert something you like- because someone doesn’t like it you like that thing because you like it. there could be a Pacific reason you like that thing that could be totally different from what your friends don’t like about it... maybe your friend just like cardi b’s music, but not her personality.... you never know
