Friend stealing
My friend told me tonight that she used to and occasionally still does steal from Woolworths.
Her justification is if she can not afford food she does not eat. This girl does not eat $2- minute noodles. She makes meals with ingredients - avocado, lemons, little things like this that aren’t 100% essential to a meal.
She wears I.AM.GIA and expensive brand name only clothes that she is always afterpaying. She can afford to go out and buy alcohol. Yet says she is entitled to steal because
1. Woolworths is a big company that wastes food anyways so she doesn’t care
2. She “needs” it and doesn’t have a lot of money (her parents pay her rent and she works and gets at least $150/$200 AUD a week)
3. She’s one person doing it so it won’t make a difference
4. Woolworths is unethical itself so she refuses to treat them respectfully- if it’s an organic/ethical grocer or something then she would never steal
I cannot believe this and she literally does not see the wrong in it. I’m a social justice student and explained why I thought it was wrong in the most educated way possible but she still wouldn’t have it.
What should I do, as this doesn’t align with my values and I’m seriously concerned as she is not at all “poor”, she lives in a sharehouse in toorak and works on a casual retail rate, earning more than I do myself an hour.
How do I confront this, is there any good justification for stealing ?
