No need to start over just keep with the routine you ha e but instead of forcing him in just lead him with a treat so he is rewarded into going in the crate. I did this with my jack Russell and he was a year old when I got him and once he got use to it he'd go in like it was his home.

You definitely dont have to start over :) just condition him with a command and lead him in with treats, and be consistent EVERY time he goes in his crate.
We used "go crate". Say it happy and lead him in with treats every time, he will pick up on it and go in more willingly at the command

You don’t have to start all over just from here on out prompt your pup with a treat when using the crate. The crying is normal and will stop once they understand the routine. 
My dog loves treats and we trained her to associate her crate with a treat. We no longer need to prompt her with treats for bedtime, she just knows the routine at this point and goes in when we tell her “it’s bedtime.” In the daytime when we go to work, we used to crate her when we were out and she’d happily run in there for her treats. Now we trust her out and about while we are at work, so we still say “it’s time” and she runs into her crate to wait for her treat before we leave, but we don’t actually close it, she is just used to the routine.

Just start putting a treat or food in and he will go in on his own. Give him a command and then give him praise. I have 2 dogs and they both learned to sleep in their kennels. One still does the other it wasn’t for him and he’s old enough to just hang out when we’re gone and he sleeps with us now. He was placed in the kennel and given treats along with a command but never went in on his own he’s always had to be placed inside, he would do it For night time and during the day when needed but as I said he just doesn’t need it anymore.  Our lab however slept through the night the first night he came home. He learned the “kennel” command very quickly and never needed treats BUT we did his set up different. We put a puppy gate around his house and laid out puppy pads in case  he got up to go in the night time he went in and out to a comfy bed/hard floor with poop/pee on pads; usually they don’t go where they sleep so he learned to sleep in the kennel and potty on the pads. We made the fence smaller as time went on and eventually took it away and started closing the kennel door he would cry to go to the bathroom at night so we’d take him outside and it killed two birds with one stone potty training and kennel training. Different things work for different dogs so you may have to try a few things until one works :)
