Would you give back or return an expensive gift if it meant a lot to the person giving it to you?

Question

My elderly father gave me an iPad. He was happy about it. These things are expensive. I don’t know if I’ll use it because I have an iPhone and laptop. He has money so it’s not an issue for him, but I can think of a TON of other things all that money could be used for and still have some left over. 
I wish he would have put that money elsewhere, but if I return it or give it back he may get upset. I have a hard time accepting expensive gifts.

It isn't his job to provide money for all the other things that money could go to. That's your job as an adult, to provide your own needs.
He gave a gift. Either graciously accept it, or return it to HIM.

well you may think you wouldn't use it but you can connect it to your iPhone and get text and everything on it.  I didnt think I'd use mine much but i use it more than my phone at the house.  and I only use my laptop for school papers.  but if you have that big of issue with it I'd talk to him about it.  I wouldnt do anything behind his back.

Return it if you need the money and he has no money issues. I was a personal shopper once and my client wanted me to go out with her after but I had no coat. She bought me a coat, after discount it was £400 and she left the reciept in the bag. I wore it for half hour and then returned it the next day boy, that coat looked Like it was from h&m, original value £900! Got the money on a Harrods gift card and used it to buy my make up throughout the year (it was a department store in london)

Oh god this isn’t a money issue at all. I’m just hesitant to even bring it up with him. He’s a bit of a grouchy old man. I try to stay on his good side. I was just curious what you all would have done in this situation.

I would talk to him about it. Personally I wouldn’t mind if somebody told me they liked my gift, but thought they wouldn’t use it much and asked me if they could return it to get theirselves something they use more. That’s just me. Maybe try that? I wouldn’t return it without telling him. Or just accept it! You may use it more often then you think. I have an iPhone, a laptop and an iPad and I use all of them often.

My grandma got me and my husband an alexa for Christmas which is something I would never ever use. I just acted excited about it and I did sell it after a while but didn't tell her. I felt so guilty about it until she called me and said 'I saw on the TV that alexa listens to everything you say even when you don't talk to her! I'm not using mine anymore!' lol
