If I plan on breastfeeding, should I bother buying any formula or bottles?

I 100% want to breastfeed & don’t know if I should get formula in case I don’t produce enough or something

All I have is the formula samples that were sent to me.  I’m in the US so that’s allowed.   I had my husband hide them in a closet that I don’t go in and put it high up so I can’t reach easily.  I didn’t want formula in the house, but it seemed silly to throw the samples away in case I need it.   I did buy some bottles because I do want to pump so hubby can feed baby as well.

Any lactation consultant or breastfeeding nazi will tell you absolutely not because it’s too tempting when you’re tired and in pain in the first weeks. Speaking from someone who was 100% against formula and didn’t have a plan for formula feeding, I would say YES it’s a good idea to have some bottles on hand and definitely do research about formula ahead of time. If you need to formula feed for whatever reason they’ll give you formula in the hospital and they’ll usually give you some to take home as well. I wasn’t able to breastfeed even though I wanted to soooo badly (wasn’t allowed to due to my medication and my failing health) and I found myself panicking when I got home because I didn’t know what formula was best (ended up going with a European brand called Lebenswert), and I wasn’t prepared with bottles either. After your baby is here everything will be a blur, so I’d try to have as many options available as you can in case God has different plans.

Bottles, yes. You can pump and feed. I’m not buying formula though. I think it’d be too tempting to have formula sitting around.

Bottles yes , because you never know if your baby doesn’t latch or not as fast so you will need to pump and use bottles .

I would say buy a few different kinds of bottles. Breastfeeding is so hard in the beginning, and so is trying to find bottles. Formula, no. I never bought any, and I have no regrets. If I had needed some, I would have ordered it and had it delivered.

As others have said, register with enfamil and similac for the samples, and get a pack of a few bottles. I did this assuming I’d never need them, and then four days out of the hospital, my nipples were gushing blood, and I needed something to appease my starving newborn. She was back to being EBF within a day or two, but I was glad to have the emergency backup, because running to the store isn’t always an easy option when Dad is back at work and it’s just the two of you.

I would buy a couple of bottles for pumped milk but I wouldn't buy formula. You should be able to get some free samples of formula at your clinic or the hospital you deliver at, then you're not spending money on something you might never use

It’s up to you, but I probably wouldn’t bother. You can always get them later if needed.
