Breast feeding?

I'm a first time mom and my baby is 10 days old. He has a very good latch but has such strong suction that breast feeding him is super painful. So for the past few days I've only been pumping and feeding him with a bottle. I kind of feel like a failure... anyone else having issues or have advice?

He’s still getting the milk! If the actual act of breastfeeding is too painful there’s totally nothing wrong with bottle feeding instead

I pumped and fed for three weeks before we figured out breastfeeding now my bean is exclusively breastfed still at 5.5 months. Hang in there. What you’re doing is so much more work than exclusively BF, doesn’t sound like a failure to me.

I used a nipple shield bc it was so painful for me. It hurt a lot at first but I stuck to it and he got the hang of it eventually. After 4 months with the shield he dropped it and has been nursing normally Ever since!

Don’t feel like a failure. You are still providing for your daughter. You are just feeding it to her a different way. I have been strictly pumping since my daughter was about one and a half months old. It is just as tough I promise. But you are a warrior! Good job!

Nipple shield worked great for me.  I know with my daughter I had a hard time at first with it being painful.  But nipple shield helped plus getting used to your milk dropping also was painful at first.  For me after going back to work pumping was more painful.  But like others have said bottle or breast if he is getting your milk it still is better for him than formula.   I was able to successfully reach my goal of breastfeeding for a year without supplementing.   Hoping for the same with our little man in just over 2 months.

I'm sure you've already tried it, but doing the football hold was a game changer for me. My daughter had a strong latch, and I was in tears the first nights home. My husband remembered the football hold (I love that man, he listened in baby class) and it was amazing. The angle of her mouth was much better, let my cracks heal, and I was able to "flip the nipple" into her mouth, which helped eliminate extra pulling. I exclusively used the football hold for 4 weeks, she's almost 2 months now and can nurse at any hold/angle without pain. 
My friend did the same thing you're doing by pumping, for the same reason. She just had her 2nd and was able to meet with a lactation consultant. It made all the difference for her! She is able to breastfeed her 2nd now, and told me she wished she had gotten advice for her 1st, that it would've changed everything.
Do what works best for you! If there's a consultant available, then I would recommend getting advice from them. Plus, not having to exclusively pump really cuts down on the extra dishes to wash 😜

Breast feeding was very painful to me right up to 6 weeks, then it got easy. Your nipples need to get used to it...definitely looking a nipple guard to ease the transition!

Do not feel like a failure at all! Hun he’s drinking your milk which is what matters your trying! My little girl was in nicu and it’s been hard for her to latch so I’m in your shoes I pump and feed her. Keep trying 💗

One of my twins has a super strong latch too. They are 9 weeks now and it’s not so painful anymore.
