How to start solids?

Question

My son will be 6 months on Thanksgiving. I have been holding off solids until then, I am planning on giving him sweet potatoes, however my son's doctor recommended starting slow, baby cereal and oatmeal first. I would like to start now. On the box it says to start with putting it in the bottle, but my son is EBF. Could I start without putting into a bottle?? Or should I pump and put it in a bottle?? I only pump if we are going on a trip and will be in the car for a while.

I can’t believe the box says that! You’re not supposed to add cereal to a bottle because it can be a choking hazard.  
Also, many people skip the cereals nowadays as they are empty calories. That’s really becoming an old school thing (using cereals at all).  If you do want to use cereals, I would put them on a spoon for baby. 
You can still start slow, but start with baby foods. Like a couple spoonfuls a day.  Then slowly up that amount over time. You’ve got all the way until 12 months before “solids” need to be their main source of nutrition. I did research on this when starting solids with our daughter and I do agree with the “starting slow” approach - to get their system used to real food.  
You can also look into baby led weaning - which is a more “new school” approach, but many people seem to like it a lot.

I wouldnt put it in a bottle, I'm actually surprised the box says that since most agree its a choking hazard, my sons first food was sweet potatoes at 6 months, if you make them yourself I would just thin it out with a couple tbs of breastmilk :)

We just started our 6 month old on solids a week and a half ago. We did start with the oatmeal and he gets a tablespoon mixed with and ounce or ounce and a half of breast milk and we feed him from a bowl. Our doctor said not to put the cereal in a bottle as it can cause a choking hazard. He gets cereal at daycare and then we offer a small amount of puréed food at dinner. We’ve done peas and sweet potatoes so far. They do recommend only introducing one new food every 3 days in case of an allergic reaction. This has worked for us so far and my son is breastfed as well.

I'm stunned the box says that also. 
With my son I skipped the rice cereal, he had bananas, sweet potatoes etc first. You could start with oatmeal first, whichever you choose. 
Just cut it up into chunks (making sure it's soft) and put some in front of him. He might like it, squish it, mush it.....that's all part of the experience. Let him go at his own pace. Eventually he'll figure out it goes in your mouth.

My daughter was only breastfed but when she turned 6 months I pureed some butternut squash and gave it to her, she loved it! I never gave her the infant rice or oatmeal stuff. I would wait a week before I gave her a new food to try

Agreed w everyone else that in the bottle is a no no and you don’t even need to start w cereal. However if you want to start w cereal you can always mix in bowl and use BM instead of water-then spoon feed. 🤗 happy solid-eating!

At six months, you can start with anything you want! Sweet potato is fine.

You don’t have to start with cereals if you don’t want to and never add it to a bottle! That is a huge choking hazard. You can start off with giving sweet potatoes on a baby spoon. Get the one that says  “assisted sitter” as it’s supposed to be more soupy.
