Are dilating eye drops safe to have during pregnancy?

I am just under 15 weeks pregnant and have an eye condition called idiopathic uveitis which means I need to be seen by a ophthalmologist every 4 months. This will be the first time I'm visiting since becoming pregnant but I'm concerned that the drops they use to dilate my eyes can harm the baby. Does anyone have any knowledge on this or know if the drops effect the baby? X

I’m an optometrist! Our general rule is we do not use them unless there is a specific condition/something sight threatening that we need to look at or treat. Pretty much there just isn’t enough studies to show that there is no risk at all but The amount absorbed into your bloodstream is so small. Just make sure your eye care provider knows you are pregnant and they will decide what’s the best course of action for you!

Tell them you’re pregnant and they will decide if they want you to have them or not. They wouldn’t give them to me while I was breastfeeding, mainly from an over abundance of caution I think.

It’s fine, I had a retina tear and optic nerve hemorrhage in my eye which obviously required them to dilate mine lol i even had laser to repair the tear, your ophthalmologist will require a note from your obgyn before each appointment (mine does) stating they’re allowed to dilate- so just talk to your OB 🙂
