Gynecologist visits?

So like two years ago (pretty positive I had a yeast infection maybe still do I know gross but currently beside the point) basically my mom had a gynecologist appointment so I asked her to ask her doctor about me going sometime. The doctor pretty much said that going to the gynecologist would be traumatizing and I should go to my regular pediatrician. I didn’t want to do that because I’d rather go to someone that sees vaginas all the time every day kind of thing. But I also see why it would be traumatizing to go to the gynecologist. But I hear people saying you should go to the gynecologist when you’re 13 or when you get your period. I’m almost 14 and got my period when I was a week from 12 I believe. Can anyone give me advice and tell me what it’s like?
