Buying car on maternity leave?

I'll be going back to work after the start of the new year and the plan has been for my husband and I to get a new car since we share one right now. Only problem is and it JUST occurred to me that they may ask for two recent pay stubs, and since I'm getting paid very little (60% short term disability) I'm concerned about being approved for a loan. We already have the last of our financing for our old car and our mortgage through out credit union, so I'm hoping that helps. Has anyone here tried applying for a car loan while on leave before? Were you denied or did you get a higher interest rate? I'm wondering if I should try waiting until I get back to work for a couple of months.
