Do hospitals give out free car seats?

My mother in law is convinced they do, but I’ve never heard of this.

For low income I’m sure there is a program but no they dont hand them out to everyone that has a baby

It’s also a myth that all hospitals check car seat installation. Ours did not. I don’t even think they checked that we had him strapped in correctly (kind of a blur so maybe they did). Many nurses are not car seat techs and hospitals don’t want that liability.

The hospital in my area keeps like 2-3 in their “extreme just in case” stock ( we learned that in my nursing clinicals) but they’re only given out in very rare and extreme cases like a mother airlifted from another hospital who gave birth after an emergent situation and they are not high quality seats by any means. It’s very very rare but it happens though.

Some do. There are resources if you need help getting a safe seat. Remember, an inexpensive new seat is safer than an expensive used one. All seats are legally required to meet the same safety standards. What you pay more for are the bells and whistles. All seats sold, when used properly per the manual, are equally safe.

No. Why wouldn’t you have one anyway ? You can’t leave the hospital without your baby in one.

They typically have them for emergency situations. But also be aware that your can’t take the baby home without one so why not buy one? I’m sure the one the hospital has (if they have one) probably wouldn’t be the one you would buy.
