What are contractions ???

‪Someone remind me how contractions work? False labor, the real thing, tightness, no tightness, is cramping considered a contraction? Do you time how long the contraction lasts or just how far apart? ‬
I have cramping. No I’m not dehydrated. Is that a contraction.

Contractions last about 30-40 sec within 5mins from each other, that’s active labor contractions
