First prenatal appointment question

So I called my obgyn when I got my BFP earlier this week. The nurse called me back and said I could schedule for my first appointment Jan 14. Which is fine but they didnt order blood work or give me any instructions at all. I'm a little upset that my first ultrasound won't until I'm 9-10 weeks. I have managed high blood pressure which makes me higher risk. Is it normal to not run any tests or do an ultrasound until I'm that far along? I honestly have seen conflicting posts here and it's got me freaked out.
