What is ovulation?

Question

I want to avoid getting pregnant even though I'm on birth control and my partner has agreed we should use condoms when we start having sex. 
However, I have heard that you can still get pregnant doing both and was told that usually happens during ovulation.
My periods are irregular and this is the first month I've been on the shot. Before birth control I could have had my period for a whole month. (Another reason why I got on it in first place.)
 Is there any way to tell when ovulation may be for someone as irregular as me?

Ovulation is when your egg is released from your ovary and is traveling down your Fallopian tubes. On hormonal birth control, you do not ovulate. The only way for you to get pregnant on hormonal birth control is for it to fail. Then you can ovulate and get pregnant. It is impossible to get pregnant without ovulation. However, hormonal birth control works by artificially altering your hormonal cycle in such a way that your hormones will never trigger ovulation, which complicates tracking ovulation. If you want to be safe, look up the typical use effectiveness for whatever birth control you are on, as it is different from the lab conditions effectiveness that is advertised. Pick a birth control whose typical use effectiveness is enough to make you comfortable. Also, use condoms while you are having sex.
