Gifts for doctors/nurses?

Question

For a normal/traditional hospital birth, are you supposed to bring any kind of thank you gift for the doctors and nurses? If so, what? I'm in the United States.

My partner brought coffee and doughnuts for the nurses as we were in a few days. But other than that no, and I think it would be crazy/weird to get the doctor a gift. They’re a (very) well-paid professional, you may end up having a dr deliver your baby who you have never even met depending on the circumstances, or the dr might just show up for the finale. I would vote absolutely not.

Last time, my husband went out the next morning and bought two big bags of bagels. One for L&D and on for the postpartum side.

For the nurses at the hospital I was thinking those Starbucks packets of coffee so they can brew easily (hot or iced) and some donuts, and the doctor (for us it’ll be our midwife) a nice thank you card. You can always bring in a basket of goodies to your first appointment after the baby for the whole office staff, as a thank you to them as a team.

As a nurse I can tell you we seriously appreciated whatever. Even if it was just a simple box of chocolates or doughnuts. We aren’t picky and we love food! Especially because many times we don’t have time to eat and that one bite of chocolate will get us through the next hour until we can.  I’ve also been thinking about what I want to get the nurses when I deliver but like I said you can’t go wrong with food.
