One kidney??

Question

I had my 20 week anatomy scan done today and the doctor told me that the baby was measuring on the small side (I am 5’0” and weigh 90 pounds) and that he could only find one kidney (right). Is this something I need to worry about? Could this have been caused by me missing some prenatal vitamins? I’m really scared something is going to happen to my baby. Please help!

my daughter has one kidney due to the other being cystic and it disappeared over time.. and she's perfectly healthy

Having one kidney is pretty common. As long as all as all the rest of the urinary system is fine your baby should be fine.

People can function with only one kidney. The problem is if something were to injure or infect that kidney then your child would need a transplant. I do not think at all that missing a few prenatals could cause that...also keep in mind that maybe the second kidney is there but they couldn't see it on the scan for whatever reason. Did you talk with doctor about what it means long term if baby does only have one? Did you ask for another scan to confirm?
