Essential oils and pets

I want to use essential oils in a diffuser and in my cleaning products, but I have dogs and a cat, so I'm trying to do some research. When an oil says it is toxic for pets, does that just mean being in direct contact, or does that also mean I can't use it in my home at all? Does anyone have an accurate list of all the safe vs toxic oils for both dogs and cats? Every list I see online is different and I don't know which one to trust.
