Toddler Eating Less

Emily

Hi ladies!

My son turned 1 on Dec. 24th, and he seems to be going through the same things I've been seeing many of your little ones experiencing: walking up a storm, a sleep regression with sudden nighttime wakings, teething and fussiness, slowing of appetite.

He's a solid boy and has been topping the charts for weight, height, and head circumference at just over 26lb and about 31 inches.

He has 4 sippy cups a day, 6oz on waking up, 4oz with lunch, 4oz for snack, and 6oz before bed. He eats a mix of purees and table food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and little snacks in between. I plan to eliminate the lunch sippy cup and replace it with water as we continue weaning off formula. We tried to start the transition to whole milk, but it looks like he hasn't outgrown his milk allergy yet because even just adding in 1oz a day, he's getting diarrhea. He can tolerate cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc. I plan to discuss this with his pediatrician at our 12 month appointment next week, but we will most likely stick with a toddler transition formula and try again in a few months.

He's my first, so although I know it's typical because they no longer need as much with the growth slowing, the appetite slowdown is worrying me. He used to have his 6oz sippy cup of formula followed by a bowl of 2tbs of quinoa and oatmeal in 4tbs of formula mixed with 4oz of pureed fruit. He's been pushing it away after finishing a little over half and getting upset if we try to give him more. He's eating less at lunch and dinner as well. I do suspect teething could be part of the problem, plus he's really excited about walking, and I wonder if he's getting upset with being in the high chair for too long.

Today, I gave him his 6oz sippy cup with transitional formula and offered him half of a piece of buttered 5 grain toast, banana, strawberries, and scrambled eggs. He drank his 6oz of formula, finished the half piece of toast, 2 big strawberries, 1/4 of a banana, and picked at the egg (he doesn't really seem to like eggs unless they are mixed with riced cauliflower and spices).

Does this sound like a decent amount for breakfast? What are your babies having for breakfast?

Looking forward to your thoughts and what is working for you! Thanks :)
