How should I cut my hair?

Question

I’ve had the same hairstyle for 10 years. Kept it long with layers. My bf wants to see me go lighter. I want to go darker (if that’s even possible) lol. I’m also thinking about CHOPPING because I want to be able to wear it down at work. So it has to be at or above my shoulders. 
One photo is totally off guard but this is my natural hair. Flat and fine. Won’t hold a curl. 
What should I do?!

I got a soft perm in my hair today. It didn’t work out how I had hoped. 😕 I was hoping for loose bouncy curls/waves but I got loose beach waves. I kind of expected it though because my hair is so fine. The texture is a bit different so maybe it will at least hold a curl when I put a diffuser or a wand to it. I won’t wash it for another day and can’t color it for at least 2 weeks but here it is.. What do y’all think it’ll turn out like after a wash??

After wash. With curl definer. Blow dried with no diffuser. I have to buy one.

I’d say get layers because you have really thin flat hair and i agree with your bf to go lighter like a balayage or full head foils. Also if you’re looking for more volume then you can get a perm it’s just really expensive and damages your hair a tad ( perm can be anything from waves, loose curls to ringlets) otherwise you’d have to spend a shot tonne of money on volumising hair products anyways. 
But I wouldn’t say chop a lot of it off at all, it’s such a good length if anything just a bit shorter.

I say chop it! Do something different, you’ll be surprised how refreshed you feel! 
I usually grow my hair out to a few inches shorter than yours, then do a chop up to my shoulders with a “lob” style. Right now mine is at the long stage & I decided I’m gonna do dreads on the bottom half of my hair instead of the usual cut. Why not!

I would try lighter first (it’s easier to change light hair to darker rather than the other way around) brave the chop! If you don’t like it get extensions! My hair takes ages to grow, but obviously hair sometimes needs a good chop for split ends to go, but I have always worn extensions so if you don’t like it short get some extensions, or if you go out out but like your hair short but want long hair to go out in you can get clip in extensions :) it doesn’t take long to get used to putting clip extensions. My hair is very much like yours fine, flat and no curlers keeping curls in my hair no matter how much hair spray I use, but I back comb a few layers on my hair (from top) and it gives it a good boost of volume, that being said be careful how you back comb because it can cause some damage :)
