When did you get a joint bank account with your SO?

My fiance and I have been together for 3 years. We have lived together for 2 and just got engaged a couple weeks ago. We give each other money here and there if one of us is short on one of our monthly bill's. Would it be easier to just share a bank account? What are the pros and cons you personally dealt with regarding a joint bank account?

The pros are being able to combine our income and make smart financial decisions together. The downside is my husband being able to monitor my Sephora purchases.

My husband and I got a joint account after we were married. We each put a percentage of our pay in to our joint account. He makes significantly more than I do so he contributes more. We pay all of our bills out of that account. We also have separate personal accounts that we use for everything else, nails, coffee, gifts, etc.

I wouldn’t join bank accounts until we were married but I think I’d still have a side account for myself for emergencies or just extra money in general. I’m a big money saver I like to be prepared. After growing up and watching my family struggle so much with money has taught me a lot on how to manage it.

We have a separate joint account. We put half of our bill momey into that account and what ever is left we spend together or half.
Id NEVER have just a joint account what i earn is mine, what he earns is his. We share our money, help out etc but id never have our full wages paid into a joint account. I think its important to still be fully independent money wise even when in a longterm relationship/ married.

I really suggest that you keep two accounts. Create a joint bank account for both of your expenses but you also need to have a private account that only you have access to. That’s something that I’d do at least and I know a lot of people who do that and it works out well for them.

My husband added me to his bank account a few months before we got married. He works out of town 3 weeks a month so I handle all the bills but he makes most of the money. So we have one joint account and my checking account, separately. I pay all the big bills out of his account and most of the little autopay stuff comes out of mine. I would not recommend it if you aren’t comfortable with your spouse seeing everything you spend money on. My mom strongly discouraged us from sharing an account because when her and my dad tried it, he yelled at her every time she spent money on anything, even gum (regardless of what he was spending). They started using separate accounts again and have been happily married for 26 years lol. They just split the bills (you pay this one, I pay that one, etc)

My husband and I got engaged when we were 17, so we were still living at our parents’ house. We moved out together the day I turned 18. We got joint bank accounts two months before we moved in together. We had been together for almost 4 years at that point, so we weren’t worried about us breaking up or any legal issues coming from it. That’s really the only problem you may face by doing it before you’re married, but my point of view is if you don’t trust someone enough to share bank accounts before marriage, why get married? 
I would talk though about both of your expectations and opinions on budgeting/spending money before you do it. Just so you both know what to expect and you don’t get mad if the other does something you aren’t okay with because you didn’t talk about it first. For us, it made saving money so much easier. And it was easier to say, “Okay, we have this much money. This is what we can afford monthly, this is how much we need to save monthly, etc.” He also struggled to save money on his own and ever since we got it joint, he hardly spends a penny. Even three years later.
