Being induced at 37 weeks

My doctor said most likely I’ll be induced at 37 weeks. I was surprised and didn’t ask many questions. If you were induced at 37 weeks or had your baby at 37 weeks was he/she healthy, could they breath on their own, how much did they weigh?

Did your doctor give you a medically necessary reason? If not, I would question them about it. Yes, 37 weeks is considered full term. However, it’s definitely ideal to have baby bake 40 weeks, as the brain is still developing. I am not trying to suggest you will have any complications, as the babies I know that have been born at 37 weeks have been healthy. Just if there is no risk to you or baby, I would let baby choose when to arrive. Plus, induction can cause more painful contractions and potentially a more lengthy labor.

Okay, so term. But that is moot, given the bigger point.

Technically 37 weeks is term. Full term is 39 😊

I was induced at 37 weeks for preeclampsia. He was healthy and needed no nicu time. They did have to help him breath a little to start. He never would latch and had reflux and had to go back to the hospital for jaundice, which was all attributed to him being a little early, but none of that was as bad as some people have it and full term babies can have all of that. (I say full term because some people will say 37 weeks is full term but ACOG recently changed full term to 39 weeks). He weighed 6 lbs 15 ounces.

If you need to be induced then it’s because continuing with being pregnant is posing a risk to the foetus (for example the placenta is failing which usually doesn’t happen before 41 weeks) or you have a significant health issue that is a risk to you and/or the baby such as a bad infection and things like that. Your doctor should have explained to you why they feel you may need to have an induction and deliver early. If they can’t give you a proper medical basis for pushing an induction as you don’t have any major risk factors then it’s probably best to decline an induction (particularly before 40 weeks) or at least get another opinion. An induction can sometimes make contractions more painful and you’re more at risk of intervention as sometimes a foetus doesn’t cope with an induction very well and we don’t know whether there are any long-term effects (there may not be any). You basically have to decide which is the lower risk option with the help of a doctor who is giving you good advice based on the science and what you’re comfortable with - sometimes it will be an early induction but a lot of the time that is the riskier or more difficult option. Ask your doctor about it and see what they have to say :) x

Induced at 37 weeks on the dot, took a couple of days he was born at 37+2 he had some issue unrelated to being born that early but he could breath 100% on his own.
