So I was never diagnosed as a child with dyslexia but I do have a moderate diagnosis since I was 18. I has been dealing with these issues as long as I can remember. All my childhood I had difficulty with school because of it. None of my teachers in grade school and middle were people of color and none of them ever made my mother away of the issues I was facing. It wasn't until I had teachers that were black in high school that information my mother of the issues I was having and that it wasnt normal.

Turning to the mental health aspect, my mother was always attentive to that as depression and suicidal thoughts run in our family. However my cousins and my moms sisters were not so attentive and suffered greatly till this day because of it. They didnt go get help and my cousin has been in and out of mental health programs as an adult dealing with issues from childhood. She cant get her life together and uses drugs (recreational drugs) to ease her pain.

My question is, should we pay more attention or do we need more education of the signs and red flags? Do you think we know enough as a community or do you think we are over looked? Do you think it is systemic or happenstance? I can honestly say it is not in the nature of any black family in know to seek out mental health assistance but I have no clue what it is like for Hispanic or Asian people.
