Thoughts on (Christian) alters in the home?

My church and the theology of my congregation preaches against them.   Their are a lot of reasons why but one of them is that is promotes idolatry and having one specific place to pray when you should be able to pray anywhere at any time.   But yet for some reason I feel compelled to have one in my home.  I think it would be nice and a way for me to feel closer to the Lord and worship when I cant attend church.  Thoughts on Christian alters (in the home)?

Interesting topic...the Bible does specifically say to not build any alters or worship idols. But those usually refer to the pagan rituals they performed to all the other gods they had. Even today, obviously there are religions that still worship idols and perform rituals and build alters. 
At the same time, I can understand that you want a specific space dedicated to helping you feel closer to a God and to set the mood and all that...but i think you just need to be careful how you arrange that. I don’t see anything wrong with lighting a few candles and playing soft worship music. That’s not really an alter though. That’s like setting the mood. An alter would be like setting up candles and making offerings of physical items, setting up a shrine of photos or little trinkets or whatever else...that would be like a ritual and can potentially go against what you should be doing. 
All God wants is yourself and your undivided attention. So if setting up a comfortable space with candles and pillows and music helps, then go right ahead!

Bullshit. The church doesn't like home alters because it was another way to try to snuff out Paganism.

I’ve been in many churches with prayer rooms in which the room has reminders of who God is, different hands-on activities like writing prayers for the church, and other things that help with deep prayer. An “altar” has a lot of deep connotations, so be careful in using that term, but it sounds like the heart of your post is fine. Just be careful as has been said before.
