What do people recommend?

It’s my first pregnancy so would I bring a suitcase or bag to the hospital when I go into labour?

I bring a backpack for things I will need during labor (robe, socks, massage balls, etc). I also bring a duffle bag for things I will need after labor.

Don’t over pack because you have to haul all of it back home but with a new small person in tow as well.
