Is she out of line or am I too sensitive?
I am a student of hearing and speech sciences and our department is very small (200 students) and everyone is extremely competitive. We don’t have any choice in professors since there is only one for every subject. This year I’m taking anatomy and physiology of the auditory system and the professor is a much older woman who has a Ph.D in audiology.
Now, I am a mother, I work part time and go to school full time. I do wear make up to school (eye shadow, eye liner, mascara and blush). I’m an extremely hard working student and get one of the best grades in all classes. But last class, the audiology professor asked me to stay after class. I sit in the front row so she sees me all the time. She asked me to stay to tell me to ease up on my make up for the professional world if I want to get anywhere.
So my 3.85 gpa, internships, jobs and being a responsive parent mean nothing; BUT, my MAKEUP SAYS IT all. What bothered me the most is her assumption that I don’t understand how to dress appropriately for an occasion . IM IN COLLEGE. The one place where I can feel 24 because at home I’m a wife, mother, cook, maid, employee and permanently exhausted pigeon. Anyways. Now that I said all this I feel like a pussy for taking it to heart.
