How much did the epidural numb your pain?

I had an emergency induction and got the epidural at around 5/6cm dilated. It only worked in my right side but I could feel everything on my left. They rolled me onto my side and it did nothing. They upped the dose and still nothing. The anesthesiologist seemed baffled and said she couldn’t do anything because I was progressing too fast. I could still feel my contractions and eventually I was feeling them all across my back and abdomen again. The doctor said “it’s basically going to be a natural birth”. It came time to push and on her way out, I felt myself tear as her head and shoulders came through. I told the doctor I could feel everything and she said it would be a lot worse without the epidural, yet I felt everything and she has just said it was basically a natural birth. She gave me shots of lidocaine as she stitched me up, she had missed a spot so I felt each stitch with extreme pain in that spot. So I’m at a loss as to whether my epidural did absolutely nothing or if it was actually doing something to help the pain.
