Not returning after maternity leave?

Does anyone know what happens if you decide not to return to work while you are on leave (In California? do you have to pay back your company for your benefits? 
I am planning on returning to work, but there’s a slight possibility I won’t want to go back. I wouldn’t mind going back for a month or two and then quitting, so I didn’t have to pay back the leave benefits.

It depends on your work. In my case we don't get paid leave, you take sick leave and vacation time. So even if I quit at the beginning of maternity leave I am still owed that time and they'd have to pay me anyway.

Check your policy at work. For example, I would have to pay back my paid leave if I didn’t return to work for at least three months after maternity leave

Check the company policy I came back to work for a couple of weeks and worked out of my house the last week and I didn’t get in trouble at all and got paid my vacation left.

I won’t be returning, but unfortunately I can’t tell them that. So, once my FMLA is up, I have to go back to work for two weeks and give my notice. Working for two weeks will keep me from having to owe a bunch of money. It’s pretty annoying, but what I have to do. I am not sure what other companies require.

Your company should have a policy. If I don't return I would be required to pay back the benefits.

You might habe to pay back premiums if you use their insurance, but not for paid leave.
