NY State Teachers and Maternity Leave..

Samantha

Hi! So, I am a teacher in upstate NY and I will be having my first baby in April, which means I will need to take Maternity Leave. Here is my delimma: It seems as though maternity leave for a teacher is ONLY your accrued sick days. After those are up, you either go back to work or extend your time with unpaid leave. I currently only have about 4 weeks worth of sick time. That just doesnt seem like enough time. And I cannot afford to take unpaid time off. I keep being told by everyone else (non-teaching friends and family) that this can't be the only time I get, it doesn't make sense. I'm being told it is NYS law to provide 6 weeks maternity leave and then you can use your sick days to extend. And I am being told to look into Paid Family Leave. But on the other side of things, I am being told teachers do not qualify for any of those things. Do any of you fellow educators have any advice, information, etc. that could help me get this figured out asap? I really appreciate it!!
