Keto while breastfeeding??

Hey guys, have any of you been on the keto diet while breastfeeding. I'm looking to start this diet but I did read online to consult with a doctor before starting if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. I am nursing my three month old son and I'm just wondering if it is safe. I know baby gets all of his nutrients from my milk but if I'm not getting any sugars or carbs will that affect him in a negative way? Please let me know thank you for reading and your advice.

Any drastic diet changes can hinder your overall breast milk supply. I don’t think the Keto diet is recommended while breastfeeding since carbs are important for breast milk production. I believe you can go low carb, but I wouldn’t completely cut out all carbs. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough studies out there to suggest if Keto is good or bad for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. I’m personally waiting to change my diet in any way until I’m done breastfeeding.

First hand experience, avoid it at all costs. I lost a huge amount of my milk supply 12oz while at work down to 4oz in a 9hr period. I am now eating whatever and slowly getting my supply back.

Not consuming enough carbs while breastfeeding can put you into ketoacidosis which is very dangerous. You may be able to do a modified version but you need at least 50g of carbs a day since you lose sugar through your breastmilk.
