How did you pick a middle name?

Question

We gave our first daughter a family name for her middle name, but we’re struggling to pick a middle name for this baby girl. My husband wants to use a random name that he likes with no meaning behind it. I’ve always thought most people used a family name or a meaningful name, but I’m open to it. Would it be weird to just choose a random name without any real meaning other than it sounds nice?

We do random names. We’re totally stuck on our middle names though. We have 3 options for each sex and we both have different ones we love, hate, and feel neutral about.

We just like our girl’s middle name and it sounds good with her first. You can do whatever you want, there are no rules! 🤟🏻

We picked random names we like. I strongly dislike giving children family names. For me it just doesn’t make sense. That name is used and I don’t get why people would name after somebody. That kid then has to possibly live up to the name. The kid deserves to make their own stories. That’s just me though. I have nothing against other people doing it, i just couldn’t do it. When my husband and i first started dating and discussed having children in the future he had mentioned possibly naming our first girl after his grandma. I didn’t say yes but didn’t say no either. We had only been dating for about 1 year so I didn’t want to say it yet. Then his aunt named her daughter after her mom so lucky for me that meant he wouldn’t mention naming our first daughter after her. After that I started making sure I would mention that I didn’t like naming children after other people. When we became pregnant we started picking names. If I picked a name I liked and he knew someone he himself would be like oh I have a cousin named that so no. Or I know this person so no. It was awesome. Lol

Not weird or uncommon. My first son's middle name is a different version of my husband's first name. Both first names I've picked for my boys so far happened to be from books I and/or my husband have read, but if anyone asks where we got his name from; I say that it was just a random name I liked. They're not names after the characters so I don't see any point in mentioning it. People get their name inspiration from family, lists online, books, other people, movies, etc. No reason to force a name with meaning unless you want to. The name will be special no matter what because it's your little one's name. To pick names, I just kept an ongoing list of names I liked and slowly eliminated them down to "the one." They came from books, names I've heard, and name lists online for me.

My SO and I chose a middle name that we liked. It has no association to family. It was our second pick for a first name.
