12 week, no ultrasound picture?

Went to my 12 week appointment today and all the doc did was listen for the heartbeat on the little handheld Doppler machine. I asked will I get to get an ultrasound picture and she said “not typically but ask me on your next appointment (16 weeks) and I’ll see what I can do.” Is this normal? When I was pregnant with my twins, I got multiple ultrasound pictures every time.

Very normal. Also normal not to get one at 16 weeks and have to wait until 20 weeks for the full anatomy scan and then to not have one at all after that. As long as the heart beat is being detected on the doppler, doctors don’t care too much about many ultrasounds and insurance won’t cover more than the bare minimum that are necessary

If you’re sure of your conception date there’s no need for a dating scan. There’s a good chance you’ll only have one scan, which will be the anatomy scan. You got multiple with your twins because you were having twins. If there are no issues most US doctors are just doing 1-2 scans the whole pregnancy. Most insurances don’t cover any more.

Twins are a different story than a singlet. If you already had a dating ultrasound, you typically don't get another until about 20 weeks to find out gender and then that's it (also assuming you and baby are perfectly healthy). Some places miiiiiight do a third to check positioning of baby if they find it necessary. If you want more ultrasounds you might have to go find a private place and pay out of pocket.

Well you dont get a picture unless you actually get an ultrasound lol but I’m guessing your insurance doesnt cover routine u/s for 12wk appt.

I got a dating scan because I had no idea when I conceived. But other than that, unless I’m high risk my doctor only does about 3 ultrasounds the whole pregnancy.

Your Dr sucks. You should have already had an earlier dating ultrasound done and a 12 week ultrasound. I would see another Dr, anything could be happining with baby and you won't know.
