Difficult coworker... need advice!
I started a job about 8 months ago. I am 32 and have about 10 years of experience and a double major. I was hired as a senior level and there was one other senior level there when I started. She is almost 60 and has been with the company for 30ish years in different capacities with no formal education but has sorta worked her way up through the ranks. The quality of her work is not great but she’s been around forever so her Institutional knowledge is what makes her valuable. Since day 1 I’ve noticed that this other employee has a chip on her shoulder- she refuses to believe any idea other than hers is a good one and not just with me but even our boss (who has been there about a year). The problem is that there are lots of forward thinking projects happening and I’ve been tapped for those and she is taking it out on me. Informally we are friendly to each other and she asks about my children and we joke and are great but the second we walk into a work related meeting she pounces on every thought or idea I have. I don’t know how to keep moving forward in a way that doesn’t create problems with her and also allows me to provide value to the company.
