Baby gate advice?

updated with picture. Our family room is sunken down by 2 steps and there is a wall in the stairs, but angled to widen from the top step to the bottom (if that makes sense - imagine the shape of a bay window but stairs) so the step to the wall is not a right angle, stair shape is trapezoid.

I have a little time still before needing to fully baby proof but wondering what suggestions people might have for this. I know I can put a free standing gate at the bottom, but feel she will just try to pull up on that and knock it down. Ideally I’d rather not drill holes in the wall, but will if needed.
