Is marriage really necessary?

I’ve recently reconnected with my high school sweetheart and we got into a conversation about marriage the other day, not about us, just in general. He says marriage isn’t important or necessary because why change a relationship that is already solid because a ring or piece of paper shouldn’t define it. I disagree and think marriage should be the goal because that’s the ultimate commitment. Thoughts? I like to hear both sides of this 🤔

Marriage doesn't make the relationship stronger or anything. All it does is add some legal benefits. It's not required to be married to show commitment.

Everyone has different opinions. Marriage was important to my husband and I. We don’t view it as just a piece of paper for legal purposes because the religious aspect was a major part of our union. Whether you view marriage as the goal or not, I think your partner needs to be on the same page or issues will arise.

Money is just a piece of paper too, yet that doesnt stop us from working hard to get it. Marriage is super important to us. Otherwise you’re just a girlfriend/boyfriend with no legal rights. If god forbid one of you ends up in the hospital then the other is not the decision maker- its his family. Unless you are married you lose out on quite a few things.. tax breaks included.

I see it as if you are truly committed to that person and only want to be with them forever, why not get married? Like what’s keeping you from wanting that..? You don’t have to have a big wedding or spend money (other than filing it legally) on getting married to make it legit. I always wanted to get married before having kids or anything, and so did my husband. I wouldn’t want to have a different last name than my kids, and the tax benefits of being married seem pretty worth it lol

My boyfriend thinks the same way yours does about this. He says there’s no point bc if you’re committed you don’t need some paper or ring and event to prove it. He believes in life partners, you’re with each other forever no matter your “status.” I literally only want a wedding so I can wear a dress and have a party. I don’t really see how it’ll change anything but your title. We both know we want each other forever and are committed to only each other.

I've been with my boyfriend for 11 years.  We own a house, have 2 dogs, a 5 year old and are 37wks pregnant with#2. 
Our first was a surprise when I was in college. Our priority at that time was to use our money to get a house, not spend it on a wedding. We didn't live in a nice area before and didn't want to have a kid there.  
Then we had upgrades to do on the home.. so money went there.  
Finally decided now or never for#2 so we chose to grow our family.  
We talk about our wedding, food, venue, music... all of it.  We just want to have the money to have to wedding we want.  Neither of us are going anywhere, so why not wait to have the money and not go into debt over a party?

Marriage is just a social construct. The strength of the relationship only changes when you get married because it’s in the mind. Hence why plenty of people still cheat when married.

Everyone’s different but personally I believe in marriage & if my partner didn’t it would’ve been a deal breaker for me. I don’t believe in a time limit being set for marriage though like my partner proposed 8 months into our relationship & when we get married it’ll be a little over two years of being together but had he not proposed for several years that wouldn’t have been a huge deal for me. I think there has to be some kind of middle ground.

My relationship hasn't changed since I got married to my husband outside of being able to sleep next to each other (we were doing this in college but his parents don't and won't know 🤭). It was important to him for religious reasons, but we had decided to be partners for life long before we got married 🤷🏼‍♀️
