An IUD?

Question

I’ve been thinking about getting an IUD, but I am worried about how painful it will be to insert and exert. 
I’m currently on the pill, but I still worry about getting pregnant
How do I even being up the topic to mu doctor?

Its not as painful as everyone makes it seem. Pain lasts 20 minutes max and its manageable.  Just say you want a different form of birth control

I was previously on a hormonal birth control pill for 6-7 years and decided I wanted something different. I did my own research online and discovered there are a few different IUD options. I opted for the Copper IUD which doesn’t have hormones. There is also a hormonal IUD. I would talk with your doctor and weigh the options. 
From my understanding, hormonal IUDS tend to ease your menstrual cycle (decrease in menstrual flow and lessen the pain of cramps). 
My personal experience with the IUD has been good and bad. They are over 99% effective which is LIT. But it is also uncomfortable during insertion, especially if you’ve never had children because your uterine cavity is smaller. There is a lot of pressure during insertion and I would recommend taking that day off because cramping is really bad the first day. Since I got the copper IUD, my flow has been heavier and cramping has been pretty bad. Everybody’s experience is different though! Rumor has it that cramping and menstrual flow begins to regulate and become better around 6 months after insertion.

It’s not scary or very painful, some people have a very low pain tolerance or their doctors don’t give them something to lessen the pain. Tylenol or ibuprofen alone and taken beforehand will not do anything for the pain. Some doctors give numbing shots on the table, some give you meds to take beforehand for softening of the cervix. My doctor did that and I felt next to nothing, just a big cramp for five seconds. I do have a high pain tolerance though.

I just got one placed a few days ago, both for birth control and because of dysmenorrhea. I have a very sensitive cervix, so for me it was very painful, but I don’t know what it would be for someone else.
