You can’t heal them. Dead ends are, well, dead. They have to be cut otherwise they’re just going to get worse or continue to look bad.

I'm a stylist.  If you don't get trims, then your split ends can actually go further up your hair strands which makes it seem like your hair isn't growing.  It can be breaking off from them being fragile. That hair has been on your head the longest and hair typically grows 1/2 inch a month, so that's a long time when you have long hair. When you wash your hair warm water can open up blood vessels and increase circulation. Also massage your scalp in circular motions while shampooing.

This is my routine. Wash your hair every four to five days or longer if you can. After washing I add aloe Vera juice and leave it in. Massaging it in the scalp. Letting your hair air dry some then blowing drying with a round brush. Adding hair ser to the ends. 
At night I sleep with it in a silk wrap. Walmart sells them in the ethnic hair section. Looks like a shower cap made of silk.
