Too soon for a pacifier?

Question

My 9 day old just nursed for 2 hours. I think she’s cluster feeding. She’s still rooting & fussing like she’s hungry. But she’s spitting up any more food she takes down. Could she be sucking to soothe? Is it too soon for a pacifier? FTM so I’m lost with what all her signs mean.

I gave my baby a pacifier from birth and my supply is fine and we’re still breastfeeding 3 months on 😊

She could be spitting up due to taking in too much air while nursing, and still hungry because of it. It’s up to you whether you want to introduce a pacifier, but personally I’d advise against it if you can hold off until your milk supply regulates. It’s totally norm for her to nurse for long periods of time, and I totally understand your worry. If you have doubts, get in touch with an IBCLC.

I gave my newborn a pacifier and I think she will be fine. I let her stay on my breast until she falls asleep on one and then wake her up for the other and then when she falls asleep if it's been a good amount of time eating I will take her off and give her the pacifier if she starts to fuss and holding or rocking her doesn't work. Usually she is not really rooting then so I don't think it's hunger. But I do try to soothe her every other way I can first before offering the pacifier and let her eat as much as she wants... though sometimes I'm pretty sure  I'm empty and have to give the pacifier right away to calm her from being mad that she can't keep eating. 😅 Trust your gut though.

If she’s still hungry she won’t take the pacifier, you will know. Giving our baby a pacifier at one week was a LIFE SAVER.  He’s 7 weeks and breastfeeds like a champ, no supply issues ever, he eats constantly still lol.

My lactation consultant said that once you have established a good latch and baby is feeding well its okay to introduce a pacifier. However if breastfeeding f you want to wait 3-4 weeks to introduce a bottle
