Weaning off nipple shields

I wanted to reach out to hear others peoples experiences with their success and challenges with weaning off nipple shields. How early on did you start weaning, how long did it take, tips and pointers?

A lactation consultant suggested I use the shields on my 2nd day of trying to latch. She said I have flat nipples so I just gave up trying to latch naturally. One of my nurses was upset with the LC but I have been using one since. My baby is now 2 weeks old.
