Crib skirt: yay or nay?

What honestly is the purpose of one? I prefer the clean look of a neatly tucked in flat/fitted sheet, this skirt thingy looks totally unnecessary to me. 
Just confused as to why such a thing exists 😆 Someone please explain! 🙏🏽

I figure it's just another thing to spend money on and have to wash. 😅 We prefer a simple look, too. But I can see where it looks cute with other people's decor.

I didn’t get one because it seemed unnecessary. You can see the one tub I have under the bed where I store crib sheets but it doesn’t bother me.
