If you found out your young teenager was pregnant would you scold them?

I’m having a debate with my cousin. She said that she’s mad because everyone in our family is congratulations my 16 year old on her pregnancy and doing all we can to try and help her prepare. My cousin says that we’re all acting like what she did is ok and that we should’ve scolded her. I don’t think we’re glorifying teen pregnancy I just feel that “what’s done is done” she knows it was wrong now we have to move forward

I wouldn’t scold them so much as say “I thought that we educated you on birth control enough to avoid this happening. We are disappointed, but we will support your decision, pregnancy, and child.”

Yes but I think both parts are important. If you’re a minor living under my roof then damn right I’m going to tell you the cold truth, but afterwards I’ll be your emotional support. Accepting the baby and willing to help out is NOT the same thing as glorifying teenage pregnancy

I think it’s her parents place to have a talk with her. Not her aunts, uncles, or cousins..or anyone else’s. I’m sure that her parents already have had talks about it. However she is probably freaking out on the inside, and for sure will have her world flipped upside down when the baby arrives. She doesn’t need to be yelled at by anyone right now. But like you said, what’s done is done. There’s no point in saying anything negative..she needs people in her corner now.

Losing her carefree years early is already her punishment. There’s no need to treat her poorly when she is down. I’d probably buy more for a pregnant teenage family member than an older family member who can afford a child.

If my 16 year old has a baby otw they will be forced to get a job (unless she physically can't work) I will not be responsible for the baby. You want to do adult things I will really make you live like one

Probably wouldn’t scold because she is probably scared out of her mind already when she found out but I would have a real adult conversation about what was done and what she can expect as a 16 year old mother. There was a post on here earlier that really hit the nail on the head about teen pregnancy as to how her friends may be happy for her now but they won’t be around once the baby arrives and how hard things really are including the emotions and hormones. I had my first at 26 and it was still a lot for me to handle and I am married with a supportive husband. Not sure if this “boy” will be around for nightly feeding and helping while she is healing but she needs to know it will not be easy and she is an adult now with adult responsibilities. She has a little person depending on her.

I would definitely let them know as soon as I found out that I don’t think the situation is ideal at all and would lay the law down in terms of them stepping up and taking FULL responsibility in being the parent. I would let them know I am not going to be acting as the “parent.” But after all that is said I would have your attitude in “what’s done is done.” Nothing you can say or do afterwards can reverse what has happened. And anything anyone else has to say about the situation is irrelevant.

I don’t think so really because they’re already pregnant and probably already freaking out themselves. A baby is always a blessing. In the hard situations you just have to tell them they made a decision and now they have to take responsibility for it, but I would definitely do what I can to be there for them and support.

I don’t understand scolding after the fact they can’t change the fact that they are pregnant. It will suck for sure, but that won’t change anything. Of course the parent is in just as much fault for not talking to their child about safe sex.

My kids are all boys but I wouldn’t scold them. It doesn’t change anything at that point I’m sure they will be very scared so I would be disappointed but supportive and help them out with everything
