Stripping baby clothes

So like the title says, I'm thinking of stripping some badly stained baby clothes. Basically it's a long soak with like laundry detergent, washing soda, and baking soda I think. I've heard of people doing it on sheets to super clean them and the water ends up really dirty because it strips all the excess filth that the washing machine can't. I was wondering if anyone has ever done this before and if it would be okay on baby clothes? I also heard it's rough on fabric over time, but really great on stains.
