Question

Ladies that have delivered with GD...what should I expect? Currently 38w3d. At appt last week I was 1cm dialated & 30% effaced. How does GD affect labor &delivery? For ex. will my blood sugars be monitored throughout? How will my numbers affect baby? Any tips leading up to birth? So far no induction date has been discussed. Any help is appreciated!

They didn't monitor mine when I was in labor last, but it was also very quick. They didn't monitor them after I delivered either and I was on a normal diet in the hospital. My baby did have some low blood sugar levels right after birth and he had to go to the NICU for a sugar water bolus, but they evened out after that. They say that even though you may feel like you can slack diet wise when you get close to delivery, it's actually very important to try to stick to the diet in the says that are near your delivery. I was induced last time, but I also had hypertension, we will see if I make it to the induction date this time.

As far as I know my sugar was not monitored during labor. They did test my baby’s sugars a few times in the first 12-24 hours after birth (she was normal weight and all clear on her sugars). They told me to go do the glucose test myself 4-6 weeks after birth but I never did.

I haven’t given birth yet but I was told that they will be monitoring your sugars throughout labour. And then baby’s will be monitored after birth. They have to get 3 good tests in a row starting 2 hours after birth in order to be cleared to go home (along with the other “regular” criteria)
