Although we are VERY happy to announce that we are having a baby boy, it also comes with sad news.

Everything seemed to be in working order until my OB announced that Oakley had not 1 but 2 structural issues in the left heart and Down Syndrome may be a possibility. Although I am fine with the Down Syndrome, the heart issue worries me immensely; from what she described, it sounds like he may have HLHS and will require surgery immediately after birth.

I’m absolutely heartbroken, and although I had a strange suspicion that something was wrong with his heart since day one I still don’t want to believe it.

We have a level 2 ultrasound in Ottawa in the upcoming weeks, I am so very worried that my suspicions of HLHS will be true.

So my question is, anyone have a child with HLHS and could share their story? I’m very curious to know what this could mean for the future of my son, what his survival rate would look like if he does inherit this rare condition.
