Is Anger a Male Privilege?
„If the female half of the world’s population would show their justified rage about sexism and oppression the same way the male half has been doing it for thousands of years the patriarchy would’ve crumbled by now, as would’ve our planet.”
Based on an article I just read (won’t post it here cause it’s in German) I was wondering what y’all thought about this?
Basically it compares societies reaction to a man and a woman losing their temper. While men usually get a pass or are even seen as „relatable“ when they get angry, raise their voice, etc., women immediately lose all credibility. Women learn from an early age that to be taken seriously we must always remain calm and friendly, our arguments have to be thoughtful and logical, our attitude has to be as non confrontational as possible. Because anger isn’t feminine. So we keep our anger just below the surface, trying to fight for change without offending anyone.
One of the examples the article mentioned was Serena Williams and John McEnroe. While Williams was heavily criticised for losing her temper and throwing her racket McEnroe has made it his trademark and was even featured in TV commercials because of it. Trump is another prime example of an attitude that a woman in a position of power would never get away with.
So tell me, do you agree that anger is a male privilege? If so, why do you think that is the case and how can we change that? If you disagree, what’s your opinion?
