At what age did you let your kid have a phone?

So my daughter is 13 and finishing middle school at the end of the month. She has been begging us for a while to get her a phone. Is 13 okay? Should I wait longer?

my niece is 12 with a phone that i’m sure her dad monitors.
i’m getting my child a phone just around 13 when they’re leaving middle school and entering high school. things are crazy out here & i want my child to be able to contact me even in school in case of an emergency.

May I suggest getting her a smart watch that only has the capability of contacting you and a few others? The idea of allowing our young girl to have free reign of the Internet is frightening in this day and age.

I had a phone in 6th grade and that's back when they were first coming out. I definitely will give my kids a cell phone before 13.

I gave my son a phone at 11. He was away a lot for sports and hanging out with friends. I wanted him to be able to contact me without relying on others. It’s a safety thing for us.

My oldest is 9 he doesn’t have a phone but I did say once he starts high school (UK) at 13 he will get his own phone. Some of his friends have phones at his age and they FaceTime him with his iPad. But I don’t mind as he’s around me when talking to them and I monitor him with his devices anyways.

I didn’t get my first phone until I was 16 and that was my mom’s choice. I was content without one lol

I plan to get my son a phone when he starts sleeping over at friend’s houses or going out with friends. It won’t me the newest phone but it’ll get the job done of being able to contact family if needed. I remember my friend’s mom refusing to let me use their house phone to call my mom to come get me when he brother was making sexual advances towards me so I had to walk about 30-40 minutes at night to get home because i couldn’t stay there
